Routine Cleanings
Regular dental cleanings and periodic oral exams are important in the prevention of gum disease, tooth decay and other oral disorders. In addition to brushing and flossing thoroughly everyday, it is recommended to have a professional dental cleaning done every few months. Routine cleanings removes stains and tartar, preventing gum disease and helps in maintaining an optimum oral health.
Regular dental cleanings are routinely performed by our registered dental hygienist. Any external deposits on the teeth like the tartar or stains are removed with the help of manual scalars or the ultrasonic machines. These ultrasonic machines use sound waves to loosen the hard deposits without causing any harm to the tooth. The teeth are polished following a thorough cleaning to make it difficult for plaque to adhere.
Fluoride Applications
We provide topical fluoride applications to reduce the chance of tooth decay. Fluoride is a mineral that helps strengthen tooth enamel, resists tooth decay and promotes remineralization of tooth areas affected by early decay.
Topical fluorides such as gels and varnishes are applied professionally, usually during the cleaning appointments. It is recommended in children and adolescents, patients with extensive dental restorations and patients with receded gums who are at high risk of root decay.
Patients who are at a much higher risk of dental decay may need home fluoride therapy, which is normally dispensed through our office
Sealants
Sealant is a plastic material that is usually applied on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth like the premolars and molars to reduce tooth decay. It acts as a protective coating preventing the penetration of decay causing bacteria.
During your examination at our office, Dr. Shah will determine if your teeth will benefit from sealants and will recommend if needed.
It is prudent to have sealants, a preventive and painless procedure, instead of allowing the tooth to be damaged by decay and going through the restorative procedure.
Periodontal Therapy (Gum Disease)
Periodontal disease or gum disease is primarily caused by bacterial plaque, although factors like genetics, smoking and spit tobacco and certain medical conditions like diabetes and AIDS, are also known to be the causes. Gum disease is usually painless and can go undetected until it is too late. The initial symptoms are bleeding gums and bad breath.
We perform periodontal therapy on patients diagnosed with early periodontal disease. This is performed by removing deep tartar by a procedure called as scaling and root planning. Periodic maintenance appointments are scheduled until optimum periodontal health is achieved. We also educate our patients about home health care to enable them in achieving this optimum level
Root Canal Therapy
Many of us have heard the comparisons of painful things to the root canal procedure. It's not that bad. There are tiny canals within your tooth that may become infected. This leads to the pulp inside your tooth also becoming diseased. The canals are then filled and the tooth receives either a filling or a crown. Crowns are more common in most cases as they add strength to the tooth itself. The procedure itself takes one to two visits.
In the past, it used to be that such a tooth had to be removed. However, majority of these teeth can now be treated successfully. We believe in saving teeth and will make every effort to save yours with utmost comfort. We want to help you preserve your natural teeth for lifetime
Tooth Extraction
Teeth that are severely fractured or decayed and cannot be restored may need an extraction. In most cases we may recommend extraction of some wisdom teeth. Also, we give our patients every relaxing technique available during this procedure. Following the procedure, we make the patient understand a few simple rules to help promote healing, prevent complications and make them comfortable.
